Root Canal – Do You Need It?

11th October 2021

Root canal is a common and successful dental procedure that helps many people with painful and inconvenient symptoms. So, how do you know if you need root canal? Here we cover all you need to know about the process and signs you may need it.

What is Root Canal?

Root canal is a dental procedure in which the pulp and root of a tooth are removed, eliminating the infection. It rids the soft tissue in the tooth of decay and cleans the area. Root canal is performed by a dentist or endodontist over two 30-60 minute appointments.

The area will be cleared of all decay and disinfected on the first visit. The tooth will usually be sealed off with a crown at the second visit.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment:

The only way to know if you require root canal treatment is by visiting a dental specialist, such as Sovereign House. However, there are several signs to look out for. If you notice any of the following, then you should contact your dentist or endodontist.

  • Toothache that doesn’t go away – A constant pain in your tooth may be a sign you need root canal treatment.
  • Pain that comes and goes – You may have worse pain at some points, and it may ease at others. You may also have referred pain in different parts of your jaw.
  • Temperature sensitivity – If hot or cold food or liquid causes pain and discomfort in your tooth, it is likely to be in the form of a sharp pain or ache. This could show an infection in the nerves and blood vessels of a tooth.
  • Discolouration – Teeth that are infected can turn dull.
  • Inflamed gums – If the gum around your sore tooth is swollen, this could show infection.
  • Cracked or chipped tooth – Bacteria can enter a damaged tooth and cause infection. They may happen after a trauma to the tooth, causing it to break.
  • Loose tooth – An infected tooth can feel loose.

Avoiding the Need for Root Canal

Root canal is often unavoidable. However, there are some things you can do to give your teeth the best care possible and help avoid root canal and other dental procedures. These include:
